Introduction

The National Flag of India, popularly known as the Tiranga, is the pride of every Indian. It represents the country’s unity, diversity, culture, and heritage. The flag is not just a piece of cloth but a powerful symbol of India’s independence and sovereignty.

History of the National Flag of India

The journey of India’s national flag began during the freedom struggle. Many versions of flags were designed before the final one was adopted.

• The first national flag was hoisted in 1906 in Kolkata.
• On 31st December 1929, the flag was hoisted at Lahore on the banks of river Ravi at midnight by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. On this day, it was decided to celebrate 26th January as Republic Day every year.
• Pt. Nehru also replaced Gandhiji’s Charkha with the Ashoka Chakra on the recommendation of Lala Hardayal.
• In 1921, Pingali Venkayya, a freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh, presented a design that inspired our present flag.
• Finally, on 22nd July 1947, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Tricolour as the official flag of Independent India.

Design and Colours

The Indian National Flag is rectangular in shape and has three horizontal stripes:

• Saffron (top) – Courage, strength, and sacrifice.
• White (middle) – Peace, truth, and honesty.
• Green (bottom) – Prosperity, growth, and faith.

At the center of the white band is the Ashoka Chakra, a navy blue wheel with 24 spokes, taken from the Lion Capital of Ashoka. It represents righteousness, progress, and the eternal cycle of life.

Meaning of Colours in the National Flag 🇮🇳

Saffron (Top Stripe)

Denotes courage, strength, and sacrifice. Reminds us of the bravery of our freedom fighters.

White (Middle Stripe)

Represents peace, truth, and purity. Also forms the background of the Ashoka Chakra.

Green (Bottom Stripe)

Denotes prosperity, fertility, and growth. Symbol of agriculture, greenery, and life.

Ashoka Chakra

24 spokes represent the 24 hours of the day. It is the symbol of dharma (righteousness), justice, and progress.

Importance and Respect

The national flag is a sacred symbol. The Flag Code of India provides guidelines on its proper use:

• The flag should never touch the ground or water.
• It should not be used as clothing or decoration.
• It must always be hoisted in a dignified manner.

National Pride

On 15th August (Independence Day) and 26th January (Republic Day), the flag is hoisted across the country with great enthusiasm. Schools, colleges, government offices, and citizens celebrate by saluting the Tiranga.
